Training Update

Sumwonlovesyou has settled into her routine down here in New Orleans. She has been jogging 2 miles a day since Friday and is doing well. We have been using a bit on her that gives the rider a little extra control of her as she can be a bit of a handful. The weather has been great lately and as such we have decided to clip her coat because it has been so warm. I'll get some pictures of her under tack and post them soon.

Thanks, Chuck, love the details - hope she's settling in, relaxing, and coming to hand :-)

May I ask what type of bit? And I assume you pair up your exercise riders by how their personalities suit the horse - any comment on Sumwon's? (i.e., filly's a bear, needs strong and sticky rider, versus finesse LOL)

maybe a picture of the first haircut for us proud parents... actually, I'm not serious. :)

It would be cool to get some videos on here of her works...if anyone has a digital camcorder. Otherwise, I know it would be a hassle. It'd be pretty cool to see some of her routine in the morning including works on the track. But, like I said, that's a hassle...so, pictures are fine with me if that's all we can do.

Whenever I get to visit Sumwon, I'll try to snap some short video clips on my digital camera, but that might be months from now...just a suggestion.

Thanks Chuck,

It's interesting to see that the last trainer was just running her and you have taken a methodical approach to school her to run. Having only experienced the races from the other side these details are most interesting.

When would you expect to start having registered work outs or racing?

She is using an elevator or three ring bit. As she pulls against the rider, the bit rises in her mouth which acts to discourage her from pulling in the first place.
I have two excellent riders, Cherie Devaux and Willie Dunn. Cherie is getting on the filly as she has good hands and is patient. She has been spending extra time working with her, getting her to settle and relax.

Jeremy
I have enough problems taking pictures while the are standing still let alone moving. But if someone has the equipment and the desire , I would love to be able to post some videos.

I think that you have to approach things differently if you are going to ask them to do something that they have not been doing. I think that she just has some habits that I would like to change before we go about training her full scale. Turf horses have to have more patience as a rule and have to cooperate with their riders if they are to be effective in slower paced races. She will probably have a timed workout sometime next week. As for a race, there is not much in the condition book for her but I will apply a little pressure once we are getting closer to a race.

Hey, tell Cherie and Jorge that they are our new favorite friends :-) Nice, professional stable turnout on the track, Mr. Simon. Nice to see your riders wear flak jackets and their helmets correctly adjusted, too.

These little day-to-day minor details are exactly the type of thing I was hoping to be able to experience by going in on the partnership, it's terrific that you take the time to post this for us.

PS - is that mysterious shadow seen in the picture "posing" Our Trainer Chuck? :-)

PPS - Jeremy, okay, I'll say, "Yes, I'd love to see her haircut picture", and I'll even be the one to ask if the filly prefers peppermints, carrots, or apples :-)

Mr Simon,

Don't have anything to add. Just a quick note to let you know that I appreciate the photos, website, and all of the time and effort.

Wait, I do have something I've always wondered about. Back in the day my uncle used to give the jockey a $50 win ticket (when he had his money down) What is the custom these days? Forty $2 bets? :-)

Thanks

John

>> Forty $2 bets? :-)

Surely, as we are horse owners now, we could each spring for $5 win tickets? :-)

Speaking of that, are we going to get our owner cards?? Isn't this like being a member of Triple A where you have to have a card to get the discount? Don't we have to have a card to get on the backside?
